Her Excellency Ms Inês Maria de Almeida

Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Timor‑Leste to Australia
Her Excellency Ms Inês Maria de Almeida has served as Ambassador of Timor‑Leste to Australia since 2020. A diplomat, policy expert and lifelong human rights advocate, Ambassador Almeida brings more than 20 years of public service experience, including senior roles in the Office of the Prime Minister of Timor‑Leste, the Office of the President of Timor‑Leste, and the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet.
Throughout her diplomatic tenure, Ambassador Almeida has focused on deepening bilateral ties, improving the rights of Timorese migrant workers in Australia through labour mobility frameworks, and positioning Timor‑Leste for full integration into ASEAN.
Having left Timor‑Leste as a refugee in 1975, Ambassador Almeida dedicated her early life to her nation’s self-determination. She founded the East Timor Relief Association in Sydney and led international solidarity campaigns across the globe. Her insight into post-conflict governance is backed by a strong background with multilateral organisations, including the United Nations, the World Bank and the Open Society Foundations.
In 2017 she was appointed President of the Board of Directors of the National Centre Chega!, leading efforts in civic education, human rights and post-conflict reconciliation. In this role she has promoted implementation of the recommendations of the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation (CAVR). Ambassador Almeida is also a lifelong advocate for veteran welfare, co-leading the Timor Awakening Program to build deep connections between Australian and Timorese veterans.
Her contributions to sustainable development, peace and human rights have been recognised internationally. In 2009 she was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the Government of Vanuatu, and in 2000 she was honoured by the New South Wales Government for her community leadership.
